Business Advisor Role Description


About One Million Black Women: Black in Business

Goldman Sachs has spent the last decade helping small businesses grow with 10000 Small Businesses. Now One Million Black Women: Black in Business (OMBW: Black in Business) is taking it further reaching Black women sole proprietors who have been in business for at least a year and are revenuegenerating with the tools necessary to turn their business potential into business growth. NYU Stern is the national academic partner for the OMBW: Black in Business program and is responsible for deploying the curriculum business advising management and all other aspects of the education program.

This free business education program is dedicated to equipping sole proprietors with the tools necessary to turn their business potential into business growth. The program helps sole proprietors learn how to price their product or service hire their first employee understand their finances and so much more.

The program will have a mix of online and inperson sessions including allexpensepaid trips for the Scholars to Goldman Sachs headquarters in New York City. The OMBW: Black in Business Program is designed specifically to help Black women sole proprietors unlock their future their power and their wealth.

OMBW: Black in Business Business Advisor Role

The Business Advisor (BA) role is a parttime position requiring approximately 30 hours per week Monday to Friday over 13 weeks. BAs will support participants in the education program of OMBW: Black in Business and provide tools to lead their businesses to a path of sustainable growth. Each BA will be responsible for two growth groups each group containing five to six (56) program participants or scholars (1012 individuals total).

A BA is one who:
  • Is committed to working with participants in a facilitative and supportive manner to identify their business needs and provide or direct them to the appropriate resources needed for their success
  • Works in a collaborative and supportive manner throughout education and advising sessions to help the scholars understand interpret and implement the curriculum topic each week
  • Promotes accountability and sets frameworks with the scholars for time management
  • Guides scholars through all their deliverables for successful completion of the program
  • Brings appropriate practitioneroriented business expertise to the program along with an appreciation for theoretical frameworks and how they translate to relevant lessons for sole proprietors
  • Guides participants to understand their funding needs and the access to capital processes and landscape
  • Is dedicated to the program outcomes of economic empowerment and community development

Responsibilities:

BAs are essential to the success of every scholar in the program and have been touted by scholars as one of the most valuable assets of the program. They advise on the completion of program deliverable and the growth of the scholars businesses through support in the learning environment and by connecting scholars to appropriate business support services. They are responsible for deconstructing curriculum topics for the scholars based on their levels of business knowledge and learning style.

Schedule:

  • Virtual weekly Curriculum Delivery sessions on Mondays (approx.1.5 hours/week)
  • Virtual weekly Business Advisor (BA) Office Hours to review homework assignments on Mondays following curriculum delivery (3045 mins/week)
  • Virtual weekly Business Advisor Team Meetings on Tuesdays (approx. 1 hour/week)
  • Virtual weekly Growth Group Meetings on Wednesdays for your two growth groups each group has a separate meeting (1 hourlong meeting approx. 2 hours/week)
  • Virtual OneonOne Meetings for business coaching and curriculum review with each of your scholars on Thursdays and Fridays (1012 individuals 1012 hrs/week)
  • BA must have the flexibility to meet with scholars in the morning/evening/weekend hours for the 1:1 meetings according to the scholars needs and time zones.
  • Reporting on each scholar schedule coordination and communication time (approx. 10 hours/week)

Other expected duties of the Business Advisors include:

  • Records all the 1:1 meetings and group sessions with their scholars and archive
  • Coaches and motivates each scholar to ensure the successful development of the key program deliverable: an actionable and specific plan that will move the scholar s business forward
  • Connects scholars to local regional and national business support as needed for additional resources and specialty services
  • Works with scholars to understand define and utilize key business metrics to support growth
  • Helps participants apply program content to their businesses and set milestones for growth.
  • Support the coordination of mentor sessions.
  • Other duties as needed to support program success and preparation time for each session.


Requirements

Core Competencies and Qualifications :

  • Bachelor s degree and minimum of 5 years successful experience in advising a small business clientele preferably working with women of color who are sole proprietors
  • The ability to provide business coaching and advising that is empathetic motivating and culturally relevant
  • Familiarity through lived or work experience with the specific circumstances challenges and opportunities facing Black women entrepreneurs and an understanding of specific ways to address key barriers to business growth
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment and manage multiple tasks efficiently and effectively
  • Strong business financial acumen
  • Ability to drive results and accountability
  • Strong spoken and written communication skills
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule
  • High personal and professional ethical standards
