Job Description

Job Summary: The Finance Manager will manage the firms accounting client billing accounts payable accounts receivable payroll and financial reporting acting as a trusted partner to the firms partners and COO. This hybrid position is available in our Chicago Washington D.C. or New York office and reports to the Chief Operating Officer.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Generate monthly financial reports and report significant variances promptly.
  • Implement changes in procedures policies and systems to minimize risk and support growth.
  • Analyze data to derive insights and inform strategic recommendations.
  • Oversee accounts payable/receivable transactions controls and accounting procedures.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of semimonthly and monthly payroll files.
  • Maintain organized and current financial files for the COO partners auditors and others.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process and collaborate with functional leaders to create budgets.
  • Manage monthly and quarterly closing processes.
  • Prepare journal entries and perform reconciliations including partner equity accounts.
  • Oversee cash flow and bank transfers with COO oversight.
  • Manage billing vendor and user data in accounting and expense systems.
  • Process client payments accurately ensuring correct application to client bills.
  • Provide support for adhoc financial analysis modeling and special projects.
  • Become proficient in Power BI ProLaw and other financial platforms.
  • Crosstrain with the COO on payroll and treasury management to cover in their absence.

Experience & Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Finance Accounting Business Administration or a related field with 45 years of accounting/finance experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 12 years of experience in a law firm and prior management/supervisory experience.
  • Proficiency in coding transactions and handling routine budget and compensation queries.
  • Experience in financial management compensation and budgeting within a midsized organization.
  • Familiarity with ProLaw Aderant Expert Sierra and Power BI preferred.
  • Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Selfdriven with the ability to anticipate needs and follow through with minimal direction.
  • Effective communicator with the ability to present information to partners attorneys staff and external stakeholders.
  • Advanced skills in Excel and ability to quickly learn new tools and systems.
  • Proven ability to drive process improvements and efficiencies.
  • Excellent time management and project management skills.
