Job Description

ABOUT SDSN

The UN SustainableDevelopment Solutions Network (SDSN) has been operating since 2012 underthe auspices of the UN SecretaryGeneral. SDSN mobilizes global scientific andtechnological expertise to promote practical solutions for sustainabledevelopment including the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement. We aim to accelerate joint learning andpromote integrated approaches that address the interconnected economic socialand environmental challenges confronting the world.

SDSN works closely with United Nations agenciesmultilateral financing institutions the private sector and civil society. Itis directed by Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs and operates through offices in NewYork Paris and Kuala Lumpur.


BASIC FUNCTION

Reporting to the VP of the Americas & Head of the NewYork office Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Secretariat theChief of Staff will support the strategic goals of the SDSN. The Chief of Staffwill report directly to the Head of the New York Office and will be responsiblefor making the New York Office function effectively. He/she will partnerclosely with the Head of the New York Office on a daily basis and providesupport in managing the execution of projects and tasks across all SDSNsoperations including daytoday management special initiatives and oversightof deadlines.

S/he will manage staff (permanent and temporary full andpart time) represent the SDSN at meetings and events support in managingstrategic partnerships contribute to SDSN publications and deliverables andmanage project budgets. S/he will prepare and contribute to the preparation ofcorrespondence reports briefings and presentations on strategic initiativesas appropriate. The incumbent will participate in policy fora liaise withgovernment and private sector representatives and engage stakeholders with thegoal of forming solid coalitions to achieve SDSNs strategic goals.

S/he will serve as a confidential resource and liaison forthe Head of the New York Office regarding developing issues and concernsmanage sensitive issues and exhibit a high degree of discretion andconfidentiality.

S/he will serve as resource mobilization specialist and willdevelop manage coordinate network implement and monitor bespoke resourcemobilization strategies with associated tasks products

S/he will collaborate on an ongoing basis with partnersdonors and internal and public audiences with the objective of fundraisingpromoting awareness understanding and supporting the program activities.

S/he will support in the development of fundraisingmaterials (brochures proposals concept notes); the preparation of a databaseof contacts and funders and administrative functions relating to the efficientreceipt of funds and compliance with donor requirements.

The Chief of Staff will lead the organization of theInternational Conference on Sustainable Development which takes place annuallyeach September including oversight of event staff.

Responsible for all additional assignments deemedappropriate by SDSN Leadership.


CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Fundraising: Advise SDSN projects and teams on fundraising.This will include approaching donors managing donor relationships developingfundraising materials and reviewing materials developed by others and trackingSDSN fundraising activities. This also includes oversight of donor reportingrequirements and coordination with the Finance & Operations team on donorcompliance. 40 % of total job
  • Strategic Projects: Support strategic SDSN projects led bythe NY Office including but the Science Panel for the Amazon. This willinclude oversight of staff managing budgets leading the implementation ofprojects organizing events and representing the SDSN at meetings andconferences. 20 % of total job
  • Oversee SDSN Events: This includes oversight of eventsalongside key global events such as HLPF and the UNGA. Lead the organization ofthe International Conference on Sustainable Development. This includes leadingthe abstract submission process developing the program coordinatinginvitations and highlevel speakers reserving catering/venue/& A/Vetc. 15 % of total job
  • Support to the New York Office: Serve as a confidentialresource and liaison for the Head of the New York Office. Support the Head ofthe New York Office in management of staff management of budgets andadministrative duties in the financial system and management of new strategicprojects. Participate in policy fora liaise with diverse stakeholders andbuild solid coalitions to achieve SDSNs strategic goals. 20 % of total job
  • Other tasks assigned by the Head of the New York Office. 5% of total job


RESPONSIBILITY FOR BUDGET/ASSETS

The Chief of Staff will be responsible for any budgetallocations associated with his/her networks or project budgets


QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • A Masters degree is required along with 1015 years ofrelevant experience
  • The candidate must have a positive attitude and excellentcommunication skills strong organization skills and attention to detail isrequired
  • The candidate must show competency for managing multipleresponsibilities simultaneously
  • The candidate must have a high level of competency usingMicrosoft Office applications including Word Excel and PowerPoint
  • HTML and social media experience is a plus
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are knowledgeableand interested in the work of sustainable development ideally with experiencetraveling studying or working in developing countries.
  • Experience supporting the administrative and research needsof individuals working in nonprofit and/or academia preferably with a focus oninternational development is also highly desired.
  • A professional working style and the ability to work bothindependently and as a team player. Willingness to take initiative and tomanage multiple tasks and projects at a time. The ability to exercisediscretion and handle confidential information is essential. Ability to workunder pressure on competing responsibilities with resilience discretion anddiplomacy

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Location: This position will be based in New York City NY.SDSN also supports a hybrid work arrangement which your manager will discusswith the candidate.

Travel: Requiresdomestic and/or international travel subject to SDSNs travel policy.

Contract Length: This appointment is valid for a period ofone year subject to renewal upon review.

Salary Range: $117000 to$175600

Reports to: The Chief of Staff will report to the Head ofthe New York Office SDSN Secretariat. In the absence of a Head of the New Yorkoffice the Chief of Staff will report to the President. He/she will supervise juniorstaff as delegated by the Head of the New York Office.

Work authorization: SDSN does not sponsor visas and therefore applicants musthave proper authorization to work in the United States. SDSN is required by theU.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to secure verification of eligibilityto work in the United States.
