Job Description

One of our clients hiring for solicitors to join their leading Crime Department. The position will provide a perfect opportunity for solicitors to develop their expertise in general crime as well as in high profile and complex cases. The successful candidates will be joining a vibrant growing and supportive team who are committed to securing justice for clients that are subject to criminal investigation/prosecution. Duty status is preferable but not essential .

Our client is a Legal 500 firm with offices in London (Central Ealing & Leyton) Essex (Ilford); Birmingham and Manchester. We have departments in Crime Financial & Civil Litigation Children & Family Law and Immigration.


The Applicant Specification

  • Qualified solicitor
  • Duty status would be preferred but is not essential
  • Experience as a paralegal or in office administration
  • Computer literate – working knowledge of MS Office Leap CCDCS CJSM
  • Proven timemanagement skills and ability to multitask
  • Good academic background and sound legal knowledge.
  • Genuine interest in working in criminal defence law
  • Strong client relationship building skills
  • Commitment to human rights civil liberties and access to justice
  • Ability to provide high quality client care and service
  • Ability to promote growth of the department
The Role

The successful applicant will become a valued and integral member of our crime team.

Successful applicants will report to the Head of Department and will:
  • Play an integral role in providing comprehensive and accurate legal advice and guidance to existing and new clients to the firm
  • Be working with a very diverse range of clients and handling their own caseload
  • Maintain accurate detailed and up to date case files ensuring confidentiality is ensured and all data protection regulations are adhered to
  • Take an active role in business development to help to raise the profile of you the team and the firm
  • Assist the team’s Partner with a variety of matters
  • Endeavour to achieve monthly financial targets including billing and chargeable hours
They will be able to get involved in a variety of matters including:
  • Representing clients throughout the criminal justice system including police stations Magistrates Court and also Crown Court.
  • Provision of advice to clients review of documentation relating to an offence research plan and investigation of matters visiting police stations and prisons to collaborate with clients draft legal documents and formulate an accurate and compelling defence for the client.
The following skills and experience are relevant:
  • Qualified solicitor or experienced fee earner with experience in Criminal Law
  • Qualified Duty Solicitor is highly desirable
  • Police Station Accredited is desirable
  • Higher advocate in the Crown Court is also desirable but not essential
  • An ability to balance the demands of clients/caseload and noncasework responsibilities
  • An ability to communicate effectively with clients and opposing solicitors
  • Adhering to all file and case management policies and procedures / compliance
  • Accurately recording all time chargeable and nonchargeable
  • Ensuring that the billing of files is carried out efficiently and at the earliest opportunity
  • Working collaboratively with other fee earners and support staff
  • Maintaining knowledge and skills in relevant practice area keeping up to date with relevant legislation and case law
  • Proven track record of providing highquality legal advice and achieving positive outcomes for clients
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and rapport with clients
  • Ability to work independently and manage a diverse caseload effectively
  • Participating in and engaging with supervision
  • Maintaining a good knowledge and understanding of IT systems
  • A willingness to be involved in business development
  • compliance with all relevant professional and contractual rules regulations and codes of conduct;
  • preparing criminal defence cases from prearrest stage through to appeal as appropriate;
  • advising and representing clients at police stations Magistrates’ Courts and/or Crown Courts;
  • efficient management of a busy case load whilst also regularly attending courts/police stations;
  • preparing appeals to higher courts as needed;
  • participating in out of hours police station rota scheme;
  • working productively to retain existing client base and attract new clients and referral sources to the firm;
  • dealing proactively with funding issues for both private and legally aided clients;
  • working on cases as required both as an individual and as part of the wider crime team;
  • effective use of digital platforms for legal aid evidence communications with Court and CPS and access to firm’s servers and case management systems;
Key Responsibilities
  • You will be exposed to a range of highquality work and gain valuable experience to define your career in this area of law.
  • Running cases from beginning to end will include conducting thorough legal research analysis collaborate with clients witnesses experts and other legal professionals to build strong cases.
  • Attend court proceedings hearings and trials to advocate for clients’ interests effectively.
  • Stay updated on relevant laws regulations and legal trends related to professional misconduct and crime.
Skills Knowledge and Expertise
  • At least 2 years’ experience of handling a varied criminal caseload.
  • Experience of working to deadlines with a minimum of supervision.
  • Direct contact with clients face to face and over the phone.
  • Experience of the digital CJSM system Crown Court Digital Case System and Common Platform
  • Good knowledge of all aspects of criminal law and particular Police Station Magistrates Court and Crown Court procedures.
  • Law Society accreditation for police station representation knowledge of relevant procedures and confident in representing suspects in the police station or other PACE interview.
  • Strong analytical research and writing skills.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation abilities.
