Job Description

My client is a comprehensive victim services agency that provides housing, shelter, emergency interventions, counseling, immigration assistance, and support to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking.

The agency has grown from a small, grassroots organization into an agency that is approaching an $8 million annual budget (approximately 65% of this budget currently comes from federal grants). Reporting to the Executive Director and serving as a
member of the senior management team, the Deputy Director of Philanthropy will oversee the strategy and implementation of Sojourner House s fundraising and development programs, including grant writing and grants management; individual
donor relations; special events; the agency s communications plan; and the organization s volunteer management plan. The Deputy Director of Philanthropy will work to maintain and increase Sojourner House s fundraising dollars by providing strategic execution to donor campaigns and gift acquisitions. The Deputy Director will partner closely with the program directors to help chart future growth and strategic response to an ever-increasing demand for the organization s services.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Grants management and program reporting (25% of time)
  • The Deputy Director will provide oversight to the agency s grant writing and grants management program, which currently includes a variety of different federal, state, municipal, and foundation grants. The Director will work with a full-time Director of Grants Strategy and a part-time contract grant writer, both of whom will undertake the bulk of the proposal writing and researching of prospective new funders.
  • The Deputy Director will ensure that fiscal and programmatic grant reports are submitted in a timely manner; work with program directors, managers, and staff to ensure that grant objectives are being met and that is in compliance with grant requirements; and work closely with the Executive Director and senior management team to determine priorities and develop an on-going strategy for grant funding opportunities.
Individual Donor Cultivation (30% of time)
  • Help to develop strategies to grow annual fundraising initiatives. This will include:
  • Providing strategy, lead the execution of, and support for the development of donor solicitation letters and supporting materials, communicating with donors, and making requests of donors;
  • Providing strategy, lead the execution of, and support for the implementation of Spring Fundraising Campaign, capital campaigns, and other fundraising initiatives, and providing support to donor-volunteers who want to help with fundraising.
  • Managing a development committee of donor-volunteers who are community members and members of the board of directors who assist with strategy and implementation of the agency s fundraising initiatives.
Oversight of Events and Corporate Sponsorship Solicitation (25% of time)
  • The Director of Development will help to implement major fundraising events in the following ways:
  • Develop and implement a strategy for major corporate and local business sponsorship solicitations. This includes soliciting sponsorships, cultivating relationships with corporate business sponsors, and maintaining contact information on donors.
  • Provide supervision to an event planning committee; ensure that the planning process for the events stays on track and assigned tasks are being delegated and executed.
  • Provide leadership on the execution of fundraising events, and provide appropriate delegation and supervision to other staff members, contractors, and/or volunteers as appropriate.
  • Serve as a point of contact for other third party fundraising events
Communications and Volunteer Management (20% of time)
  • The Deputy Director will provide supervision to a full-time Communications Manager, who will build and execute an internal and external communications plan.
  • The Deputy Director will also provide supervision to a full-time Volunteer Manager, who will recruit, train, and retain volunteers to support the agency s operations and to cultivate volunteers into donors of the agency.
Other Duties:
  • Performs other duties as requested by the executive director.
  • Some evening and weekend work occasionally will be required.
Staffing Structure:
The Deputy Director of Philanthropy will provide supervision to a full-time Director of Grants Strategy, a full-time Communications Manager, a full-time Volunteer Manager, and a contract grant writer. The Director will work closely with the Executive Director and board of directors on strategic fundraising goals.

Requirements

Must be self-motivated with a passion for meeting and exceeding goals;
Advanced degree preferred; bachelor s degree required;
At least 8+ years of professional experience in non-profit organizations or
government work;
Ability to set and achieve strategic objectives;
Outstanding organizational skills;
Excellent computer and research skills, with proficiency in Excel, Word,
PowerPoint, etc.
Excellent interpersonal skills;
A demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards in a diverse
workplace;
Superior written and verbal communication skills;
Demonstrated success in seeking and obtaining grant funding for programs;
Demonstrated success in securing corporate and/or individual donor gifts;
Demonstrated success in planning fundraising events;
Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people;
Evidence of commitment to the work of the non-profit sector;
Action-oriented, adaptable, flexible, and innovative in thinking and approach to
problem-solving.
