The Safety Intern supports providing a safe workplace for Igel employees and its subcontractors, as well as achieves and maintains OSHA and DOT compliance, as well as the safety rules and regulations of the clients with whom Igel works.

Hours: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. unless otherwise dictated; 45-50 per week
Location: This internship is located near our Corporate Headquarters located in Columbus, Ohio. Relocation assistance is not part of the compensation package.
Duties:
General
- Assist with safety or industrial hygiene for duties as needed
Onboarding/Orientation
- Attend George J. Igel & Co., Inc. orientation as well as additional safety department training
Safety
- Perform job site safety audits on 10 projects per week after training is complete and send to appropriate project management.
- Review paperwork during safety audit such as foreman reports and site specific paperwork that is applicable at the time of inspection.
- Attend morning huddles and provide constructive feedback twice a week during audits.
- Attend any onsite safety meetings as required for training purposes with additional Igel safety department representative
- Perform all safety compliance-related training
- Effectively communicates with associates & leadership team both orally and in writing
- Address safety hazards, as they occur, with onsite crew and make necessary modifications for compliance and safe working practices
- Identify respirator needs and ensure compliance
- Identify opportunities to collect industrial hygiene data and coordinate with third-parties
- Be familiar with and educate employees on the use of Igel safety forms.
Industrial Hygiene
- Conduct surveys and observe work conditions to identify processes which pose a risk to health of employees
- Carry out industrial hygiene field measurements to verify levels of pollution in the workplace.
- Analyze and interpret results of an assessment to develop plans for improved work condition
Qualifications
High school Diploma
Currently enrolled in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or Environmental Science program preferred
Familiarity with OSHA, MSHA, DOT, and MUTCD preferred
