Engine Captain (Supervisory Forestry Technician)
Job Summary: At Chloeta, the primary responsibility of an Engine Captain (Supervisory Forestry Technician) is leading his or her crew in the safe and effective completion of assigned workon and off the fireline. This role includes administrative duties such as timekeeping and travel record-keeping. Supervisors will receive advanced training in fire suppression skills, plus training in leadership and supervision. Supervisors are expected to execute fireline assignments with a minimal amount of operational oversight.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- This position serves as the Primary Supervisor for a team of direct reports of three (3) to seven (7) other wildland fire personnel
- This position reports directly to the Strike Team Leader (STL) or, at times, the Zone Fire Management Officer (FMO)
Job Classification:
- Both Career Seasonal (Full Time) and Paid Call (Call When Needed) Wildland Firefighter (Forestry Technician) positions are available.
- This position is FLSA Non-Exempt and eligible for Overtime
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Leading his or her crew in the safe and effective completion of assigned workon and off the fireline.
- Provides for crew safety and welfare during tactical operations in compliance with all applicable tactical operations.
- Directs a crew in project work in support of ecosystem management and fuels management projects.
- Develops and implements training programs (mandatory, formal, and informal) in compliance with policy and regulations.
- Manages property, procurement, maintenance, and inventory of equipment and fleet equipment.
- Provides technical and administrative supervision to an engine. Develops performance standards. Gives advice, counsel, or instruction.
- Track and approve timekeeping and travel record-keeping.
- Supervisors are expected to execute fireline assignments with a minimal amount of operational oversight.
- Responds to incidents with their crew in a timely, safe and skilled manner.
- Follows established Company procedures when responding to incidents.
- Correctly and promptly oversees the utilization of all relevant apparatus, tools, and equipment.
- Maintains a positive attitude and strives to meet the clients needs.
- Safely operates Company vehicles, and equipment as directed.
- Oversees the maintenance of fire apparatus, tools, and equipment keeping such apparatus, tools, and equipment in good operating and safe condition by competently and efficiently performing maintenance and testing tasks.
- Oversees routine non-firefighting work tasks willingly and adequately such as working on Company records, time cards and other related paperwork.
- Functions satisfactorily as a team member of a fire company at any emergency or non-emergency scene, and willingly accepts their share of the work required.
- Remains skilled in and properly applies modern fire suppression tactics, methods, and procedures.
- Projects a positive image to the client as a fire service professional.
- Supports the Company mission and vision and works effectively in following policies and procedures
- Oversees data collection on threatened policies and entering into databases with a high level of data integrity while triaging and mitigation wildfire risks on policies.

Required Skills/Abilities:
- Required: Current/valid State issued Drivers License (DL) with acceptable driving record
- Preferred: Current/valid State issued Drivers License (DL) with acceptable driving record and DOT Medical Examiners Certification (will be authorized by employer for qualified individuals)
- Represent Chloeta professionally at times
- Operate effectively in team settings in high stress environments
- Maintain a high level of physical fitness
- Maintain a constant of readiness for response nationwide
Education and Experience:
- Required: S-211, S-212, S-230, S-219, S-290 and L-280 or NFPA 1021
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to pass a WCT (Work Capacity Test/Pack Test) at Arduous Level (Complete a 3 mile walk wearing a 45 pound pack in less than 45 minutes)
Pre-employment Requirements
This position may be contingent upon passing a security clearance, background check, drug screen, Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review, or credit check after acceptance of an offer and prior to beginning work, due to the nature of the services Chloeta provides. (link removed)
Duty Station
While your Duty Station may be your residence for this position, extensive Company compensated travel (+75% of the time) should be expected.
Pay
- $26.08- $28.43 per/ hr.
